Search Engine Optimisation is about People - write good content and ask other
people to link to it. Below are sujects that are in the online course in great detail
that will help you achieve high rankings, conversions, and sales
Title tag
It's the first thing people see in Google results - so it's important. The words
(keywords) in the Title tag are given a lot of weight by the search engines.
Heading tags
Put your headings inside heading tags (H1, H2, H3...). The search engines give this
text more weight.
Bold tags
Search engines give text in the bold tag (B or STRONG) more weight.
Add new content rather than changing existing content
Consider making additions to your content instead of changes. It's an easy way to get
more content into the search engine so people have a better chance of finding you.
Don't remove old content
The more content on your website the better, so don't delete old content. If something
becomes out of date, move it to an archive page. As long as you link to the archive page,
search engines will still find the content, but it won't get in the way of your
up-to-date information.
Update content frequently
Search engines regularly visit your website to download your content. If the content
hasn't changed since the last time they visited, they will "lose interest" and not check
back as often. If you update content very often, the search engine will notice, and start
visiting more often.
Important content at the top of the page
Search engines are like people, they lose interest as they read further down the page.
Make sure your important content and keywords are at the top of the pag.e
Have 1 page per subject
Don't talk about lots of different subjects on the one page. Make a separate page for
each subject. This makes the keywords for that subject "concentrated" on one page, so
it's more likely to be found.
Don't block content behind "registration walls"
If you force someone to sign-up and login to view content, then the search engine will
never know it's there. Avoid sign-ups and logins wherever possible.
Allow Search Engine through "registration walls" if you must have them
If you must have a login, then it is possible to configure the login to automatically
allow search engines through.
Avoid duplicated content
If you have lots of different pages with essentially the same content then it looks
like you're trying to "keyword spam". The search engines will mark you down for that.
This works in well with the "1 page per subject" rule.
Links
Avoid broken links
Search engines will mark you down if they find enough errors. Broken links don't help
contribute to anyone's PageRank
Incoming links
Incoming links (when someone else links to your website) are the most powerful way to
increase your PageRank. An incoming link is a "vote of confidence" from someone else
about your website.
Outgoing links
Outgoing links are important even though they don't have a big effect on PageRank.
They have a small effect on PageRank, but most importantly, if you don't link to anyone
else, then why would anyone link to you?
Include text in links
A link to a webpage tells the search engine "this webpage is good". It's important to
include text inside your links so the search engine knows "this webpage is good for
*these keywords*".
TITLE tag
Just like ALT tags on images, TITLE tags on links give people a little yellow popup of
text. It also gives the search engine more text (keywords) to associate with a link.
Use absolute links (instead of relative links)
When you link to another page it's possible to use relative links that are shorter,
for example "../home.html". It's better to use the full link
(http://www.example.com/home.html) because relative links confuse some search
engines.
Relevant websites link to you
Incoming links are very important, but it's equally important that they be relevant. A
page about the universities will get much greater benefit if the University of Sydney
linked to it, rather than say a website about nursing. The University link is very
relevant to the content of your page, but the nursing link might not be so relevant.
Link to relevant websites
If you have a page about a particular subject, then find other websites on the same
subject to link to.
Have high quality (high PageRank) websites link to you
Reputation is also very important when someone else links to you. Links to your
website from other high quality websites are the most important and effective way to
increase your PageRank.
Link to high quality (high PageRank) websites
Linking to other website doesn't directly increase your PageRank. Links to high
quality website give value to your visitors, and make it more likely that other websites
will link to you (what goes around comes around).
Link to the most specific page (don't just link to the homepage)
Have websites link to your most specific page (don't just get them to link to your
homepage). Specific pages are more relevant so you get more benefit from the link.
Don't add too many links to one page
Enormous lists of links look "spammy" and can harm your ranking. If you have a really
big list, for example an Exhibitor List, you can link to a little blurb on your website.
The blurb page contains the link to the other website.
HTML
Title tag
The Title tag sets the text that appears in the title of you web browser window, the
list of pages in your History and Bookmarks and the heading of your Google search
results. Search engines give a lot of weight to the keywords that appear in title tags,
but try to keep them short enough for people to comfortably read. 60 characters long is a
good limit to bear in mind.
META tags
META tags contain text that is never directly visible in the web page. The Keywords
META tag is used to give search engines a list of keywords for this page. The Keywords
META tag is basically ignored. The Description META tag is a one line or one paragraph
description of the page. It is quite useful as it can help Google create the description
of your website in the search results.
Don't hide text
It's possible to put white text on a white background, for example, so people don't
see it but search engines still pickup the keywords. Search engines can detect that kind
of trick, so don't try it!
Valid HTML
All of those <'s, >'s and &'s are there for a reason! If your HTML is broken
or invalid then the search engine not be able to understand it - and just give up! Try
the W3C markup validation service at http://validator.w3.org/.
Clean HTML
Valid HTML might not have errors but it can still be dirty. "Clean" HTML has as much
content as possible, with as little <'s and >'s markup as possible. The search
engine has to download and look through your web pages so minimising the amount of markup
will only make it easier to find the content!
URL's
Use guessable URL's
Guessable URL's use plain English to make it obvious where you are. A URL like
http://www.example.com/products/latest-releases/product-name is very clear. It contains
plenty of keywords for the search engines, and makes it easy for visitors to "hack" off
the URL and visit the Products page, for example.
Don't identify pages by the Query String
Some website use links like http://www.example.com/index?page=home,
http://www.example.com/page=products, etc. Even worse are links like
http://www.example.com/?id=p191123857. Search engines limit indexing pages with "?" in
the link (because it looks like it's coming from a database) and there isn't much content
in the link to help a visitor or a search engine guess what it's about.
Images
Don't display content only with images
Search engines can't see keywords drawn into images so always include explanatory text
for important images.
ALT tag
The ALT tag is an attribute that is used to attach a text description to an image. The
ALT tag is intended to explain the image (in those situations when the image can't be
seen) so don't just stuff it full of keywords.
Flash
Avoid "skip intro"
"Skip intro" pages are annoying, expensive and mostly very poor quality. Most website
visitors only give you one "mouse-click" of their time - and a "skip intro" wastes
it.
Avoid content in Flash - can't be indexed
Content inside Flash animations can be totally invisible to search engines. Clean HTML
is the best way to get your content and keywords into the search engines.
PDF
Avoid content in PDF (use HTML and give a PDF download option)
PDF files are nice for people to download and print but it's hard to search for text
inside them. Make a webpage with all of your content, then link to a PDF version on that
page. The search engines can easily download your HTML, and people have a PDF option if
it's convenient for them.
Keywords
People search for phrases, not words
People search for 3 word phrases on average because phrases lead to better search
results. "Exhibition" is very generic, but "Education exhibition" is much more likely to
give you relevant results. Start with a list of keywords for optimising your content, but
expand this into a list of key phrases.
Try to use the consistent wording
Stick to your key words and key phrases. If there are several variations on a theme,
for example "Education Exhibition" versus "Education Expo", you can make separate pages.
Each page can consistently use one wording. Be careful not to make two pages that are
basically identical. If two variations lead to very similar pages then page can be the
"main" page and the other can briefly mention the variation, and then link to the "main"
page.
Web Server
Register your domain name early
If your domain name has been registered for a long time the search engines will give
you more credibility. This implies that you should register new domain names as soon as
possible.
Register your domain name for long periods
Domain name registrations regularly expire and you must renew them. You have the
option of renewing the registration for 1 year, 2 years or more at a time. The longer you
register your domain name (2 years or more) the more credibility you will have.
Unique IP Address is better than Shared IP Address
Your domain name uses an IP Address to identify the web server that hosts your
website. It's possible to have several different websites using the same IP Address but
it's better to have a unique IP Address for each website.
Error pages should be helpful
When someone visits an incorrect or out-of-date link you web server will display a
"404 page not found" error. It's possible to customise this unfriendly error with
something more useful.
